For Those Who Call Coalwood Home
Volume 4 – Fall/Winter 2010-2011
Sadly Missed
There have been several current and former residents of Coalwood that have passed away recently. They will be dearly missed.
Ernest O’Dell (Red) Carroll, age 92, of Coalwood
Eugene Hicks, age 82, formerly of Coalwood
Clarence Gunter, age 87, of Coalwood
Helen G. Baylor Padgett, age 89, of Coalwood
Beatrice Huff DeHaven, age 97, formerly of Coalwood
Fires
There have been three house fires in town. One destroyed an abandoned house in Mudhole. One on the main road resulted in serious injury. The other in Snake Root tragically took the life of Ernie Spence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to these families.
Genealogy
This past fall the Coalwood Historical Society presented the Carroll County Virginia Genealogy Society with four bound books we compiled. Two books were the death certificates of past residents of Coalwood and Caretta. One book was of the war veterans from the Coalwood-Caretta newspapers. The last book was a collection of articles from the Mutual Magazine printed by Consolidation Coal Company. Many of the residents of Coalwood and Caretta were born in Carroll County. The roots that bind the two areas run deep and the Genealogy Society was thrilled to accept our donation to their research library.

The Letter- by Steve Date
September 2010 West Virginia Days in Hillsville, VA seemed to be the smallest crowd that has gathered in many years. Approximately 180 folks showed for the event. Everyone brought a covered dish. There was mingling, sharing of stories, and great food. If you do not have your name on the list to be notified for this years WV Days, email David Goad,
Christmas in Coalwood
The Historical Society, the Coalwood Community Church, and the Cape Coalwood Restoration Association worked together to help make Christmas a very special time in Coalwood. Santa, Mrs. Claus and Elves delivered nearly 50 stockings to the elderly and shut-in residents. A party was held with the kids. All enjoyed toys, pizza, and visits with Santa. A special thanks goes out to all the charitable folks that donated to this special annual event. We’d also like to extend a special thank you to Robin Ecoff who took the time and efforts to quilt the stockings. Robin has again offered to make the stockings for the 2011 Coalwood Christmas and is already busy doing so.
(dgoad2@verizon.net) , he will make sure you are added to the list. Postcards are mailed out announcing the event.
At the last OSF, Reba Bolt held a private viewing of The Letter, a short movie by Steve Date. This touching story was told by once Coalwood Club House resident, Casey Gauntt. There was not a dry eye in the house. Way to Go Steve! Keep
sharing those Coalwood stories with the world!
A special salute to the brave soldiers of the 59th Mac Army Engineers, currently serving our country in Afghanistan. We’re proud of your gallant efforts!
