A Coalwood Christmas

Holiday time is quickly approaching. Each year the CCRA (Cape Coalwood Restoration Association) holds a holiday celebration for the seventy children living in Coalwood. Each child is presented with fruit, candy, and treats.  Santa arrives and passes out the treats.  Children have their picture taken with Santa.  Pizza, cupcakes, soda and a good time is had by all. A DJ plays music; games are played and prizes given.  There are fifty elderly shut-ins that are also acknowledged at this time of year. The Coalwood Historical Society has pledged to assist in giving a Stocking filled with Holiday Cheer to each of these people.  “Operation Stocking Stuffer” is well underway. If you would like to help support A Coalwood Christmas, your donation would be greatly appreciated!
The party will be held on December 12, 2009. Your tax-deductible contribution can be sent to the Coalwood Historical Society  PO Box 1479  Geneva, FL  32732.  Reba Bolt is accepting toy donations for the children. If you would like to send toys by US Postal Service the address is  Reba Bolt   HC 31 Box 82  Welch, WV  24801   UPS shipments can be sent to Reba Bolt  House 590 SnakeRoot Hollow  Coalwood, WV 24801.    Visit our Operation Stocking Stuffer Page

We wish everyone a happy, healthy, safe holiday season.

Community Church Has Heat

This time last year the Community Methodist Church in Coalwood was without a heating system that worked. Services were being held in the basement with blankets to keep members warm.  It was with an astonishing outpouring of help from the Coalwood Community around the United States the money was raised to put a new heater in the Church. We send a big heartfelt thank you to all those who helped with this endeavor.
Lighting Up Coalwood

Did you know Coalwood holds a Christmas Lighting Contest each year? Residents clean up, fix up and really go all out with holiday decorations. Judges are selected from out of the community and tour the entire town. Prizes are awarded.  First prize is $100. Second prize is $50. Third prize is $25.
A Somber Note

Big Creek graduate, Grant Smith and his wife, Cindy, died in a automobile accident on Sept. 26, 2009 as they were traveling from their home in North Carolina to visit with Grant’s mother, Cathleen Smith in Falls Mills, Va. Grant Smith was the son of the late Early Smith, who served as Homer Hickam Sr., fireboss at the Olga Coal Company mine in Coalwood, and was also the scout master of the Coalwood Boy Scout Troop.
